This app deserves 10 stars! I classify it as a Pro quality drum machine...without the Pro price. Seriously... look no further, we are all really lucky to have a great collection of quality drum machine apps by this author...and for a tiny price. Love it!

I bought RD5 to accompany myself on my stage piano, hoping to use MIDI commands from BandHelper (an excellent tool for organizing sheet music and MIDI presets that I recommend to any musician). RD5 has incredible sounding drum kits. They are among the most realistic of all the IOS drum apps, and if you’re seeking rock style drum accompaniment with out of the box beats, RD5 may be far and away the best. RD5’s “artificially intelligent” improvisation really sounds like a live drummer. Unbelievable! So why only 3 stars? Two reasons: 1) The MIDI functionality is incomplete: It’s possible to set Tempo, Bank, Rhythm, Swing and Jam Intensity with a combination of MIDI and Ableton Link (Tempo). You can start and stop the beat, and command a fill via MIDI. There is no way to set the SoundSet (which drum kit plays the beat you’ve selected) without manual intervention. Also, you can’t set how many bars between the auto-generated fills, using MIDI. Luis’ MIDI reference gives the MIDI code for SoundSet. It does work, but only if you’re in Notes Mode. The rub is that if you set the app manually to Notes Mode, none of the other MIDI commands I referenced above work (they require “Program Change” mode). Apparently, there is no way to send a MIDI command to toggle between Notes and Program Change modes. 2) Luis, the developer, isn’t very responsive: Luis has answered a few of my emails, and with the information he gave me I have made slow progress in getting my MIDI automation closer to where I want it. But, I’m still waiting to hear back from him how to use MIDI (or some other inter-app protocol BandHelper supports) to set SoundSet (or to toggle between Notes and Program Change modes, enabling all the MIDI commands that do work). I think I’m asking for something reasonable. I want to click a pedal and have RDM5 select the Rhythm, SoundSet and Tempo, then start playing. I’m almost there - I have all the MIDI commands working, but have to make a manual selection in the app right in the middle. That just doesn’t make sense to me! I contacted Luis several more times. At one point he asked me to explain what I was trying to do. I explained it in detail and asked for assistance with his app. I’m still waiting... If I can’t figure this out on my own, it seems I’ll have to find an alternative to RD5 and my $17 will have been wasted. What a shame! Especially given that so much of RD5 is truly outstanding. I imagine that I’m doing something wrong. With a little assistance, it’s likely I could solve the problem and have a fabulous electronic drummer to accompany me. Luis, please answer me. I’m really trying to do this on my own, but despite my years of engineering experience and lots of effort, I am not succeeding.
