The Pocket Scavenger App Details

From the creators of Wreck This App and This Is Not an App comes an award-winning app experience that encourages you to use your phone or tablet to actually interact more with the world around you. With The Pocket Scavenger app, you’ll be asked to find and photograph a spectrum of quirky items: something that is miniature, a stain that is green, something from the year you were born, a used envelope, and more. Once your quarry is in sight, you can choose an alteration dictated solely by chance: create a funny character, add a family member, photograph it at night, make it “pretty,” and so on. After completing a scavenge, you can upload it to the map and see what scavenges are going on around you. You can also share your scavenges on social media before embarking on a new hunt. By incorporating chance into creativity, you’ll be forced out of habitual ways of thinking or acting, discover new connections, and interact with the world around you in ways you might not have imagined before. Apartment Therapy says The Pocket Scavenger “…is onto something that other app-makers have been trying to get at for a long time: the element of serendipity and spontaneity in our social media experiences… an app that attempts to bridge the divide between our mobile devices, our muses, and objects directly in front of us.” The app is “…designed to make you stop and look around you, and maybe even see the potential beauty in the most ordinary of objects,” as recommended by Games Fiend. The Pocket Scavenger app won the 2014 Digital Book Award for Best Adult Non-Fiction App. NOTE: In order to place your scavenges on the map for Fellow Scavengers to see, you will need to be signed in to Twitter.

App Reviews

  • Worthless!

I really wanted this app, because I own and love Keri Smith’s books as well as the Wreck This app. Despite the bad reviews, I purchased - and it is even worse than expected. A NO-star app. Not only does it crash when I try to take or upload a photo, it is buggy beyond comprehension. After crashing, I go into the app and cannot get anything to work (home icon, etc.), it just links me to Penguin’s website. Bad, bad developer. And no way to contact them. The red string in the promotional video could have done a better job developing the app. DON’T WASTE YOUR $$.
  • Fun but…

This app was fun but it would be better if there was more features and less crashes but besides that it is great!!😃😐
  • I love the idea, but...

It is entirely unuseable as it crashes every time you try to take or attach a picture. Which is entirely unacceptable for an app this expensive. I love the other apps, and I love the idea of this one, but it is broken...
  • Crashes

I would really, really like to use this app, but it crashes every time I try to add a picture. If this could be fixed, I would definitely use it!!
  • Crashes!!

Every time I attempt to attach a photo it crashes! And I mean every single time! Ridiculous for a $5 app!

I enjoy this app even though it crashes when I try to add pictures.

  • Expensive but fun

I haven't looked at the book version but this seems perfect as a phone app. Since phone is on me all the time it's easy to whip out and snap a photo of whatever I'm supposed to be looking for. But input seems to be photo only which works for the most part but for writing or drawing wish you could do that directly if you choose. Also being able to collage items together without using another app or use multiple pics like when you need to find several things of a certain shape or color. I like to try to find unusual items or at least in different places. I was hated to pay so much for an app but compared to the others in the "wreck this" series this seems to work best as an app especially on a phone.
  • Fun...?

Fun... I guess... Only when your bored.
