App Reviews

  • Patronizing and proprietary

I only used this application for about a month before I stopped. I don’t doubt that the weight loss plan works, but the daily articles and coaching, with their twee aesthetics and patronizing tone, really rubbed me the wrong way. I felt like I was morally deficient somehow, like part of the plan was to make me repent for my earlier sins of eating the way I ate before, as if I purposefully decided to be overweight. I’m sure that the coaches/staff of the app would respond that they would never intentionally take that tone, but that’s how it came across to me. Maybe it’s just me reading into the app through my own neuroses, but I got a distinct sense of cultishness, like losing weight and changing my tastes to enjoy things I don’t particularly enjoy now will make me a better person, as opposed to helping stat healthier for other purposes. I also didn’t like the color system. I understand that the goal is to make choosing healthier foods easier, but I feel that it was simplistic and didn’t translate into home-cooked foods. It’s easier to use pre-packaged foods, which I understand, but anything that smacks of Weight Watchers Points or other proprietary aspects of a program raises an eyebrow. I recognize that, if you’d made it this far, you will probably be thinking that I’m just a bitter guy that didn’t do the work and wanted results with no effort, and that is not the case. My wife and I both started using this app (it was her idea) in January, and I put in significant effort into changing my diet and moving more and lost about five or eight pounds at a healthy clip. I tried, and wanted it to work, but couldn’t stand the patronizing app and the unhelpful coaching. The group felt less like support than like an AA meeting, a place to go to flagellate myself because, shocker, brownies taste good. The thing that made me write a review, however, was being automatically charged to renew my subscription after MONTHS of inactivity WITHOUT ANY NOTIFICATION. The system requires that you use the application on your device to cancel your subscription by talking to your “coach.” To their credit, the system automatically generated a message saying my subscription was canceled, but I don’t understand why I could unsubscribe on the desktop version of the site. If there is a technical reason for this, I’m happy to hear it, but the way it seems to me is that requiring users to download the app again is intended to try and convince them to continue using it. In conclusion, I would not use this app again. I don’t doubt that eating healthier food and moving more helps with weight management (wow, big surprise) and the support of a group and a coach certainly helps in developing and maintaining healthy habits, but this application seems less like a helpful friend and more like a way to make money from people who want to make a change. EDIT: After contacting customer service with my refund request they offered to refund half of the auto renewal. I responded that that was unacceptable, and they refunded the full amount. This is to their credit. The rest of my review, however, stands.

    I love this app.
  • Fine App but Poor Cancellation/Refund Policies

I used the app when I was motivated, read all the articles, grazed over the self-questioning quizzes, etc. I found weight loss success for a few weeks but it was slow going. Anyway, after losing motivation and not opening the app for months, I anticipated on cancelling. However, cancelling my $99 auto-renew subscription required me to send a message in the app to my group coach, something that I felt was designed to make me feel bad and then not actually cancel. So I did not send a message and assumed that since I had received a new credit card from the time I signed up, Noom wouldn’t be able to charge me and I was in the clear. Well, I was somehow charged anyway and two days after being charged, I sent a cancellation request to my group coach, with an explanation of what happened. She fortunately did not pressure me to stay with Noom but given that I have not used the app in months and cancelled my subscription two days after being charged again, I thought the company would be gracious enough to refund the new charge. NOPE! I can’t find a phone number anywhere to politely dispute the charge. All customer service issues are dealt with thru messages in the app, thru their contact form on their website, or the generic support email address. Simply put, I am disappointed in the way this company has handled my cancellation and I am now out a hundred bucks.

I usually don’t go this route but I am getting desperate. I have submitted several requests for help and have only gotten the automatically generated reply. I cannot log into this app- and I am Day#4 of the trial- I do not want to be charged for an app I CAN’T EVEN GET INTO!! but to cancel you have to get into the app. So no at the moment I don’t recommend this app- if anything goes wrong no one is there to help.
  • Needs work

Not bad in concept, but they need to iron out some of the issues. Quite a few grammatical errors in the daily lessons. This makes it hard to trust that it is a valid source. They should have someone proofread their content better. Also, the goal specialist that I have does not respond promptly at all. (Takes her days to respond). This makes it hard to set new goals.
  • Customer service is useless. They canceled my subscription for no reason.

So incredibly unhappy with this app/company. Literally never written a review on the app store before, but this was an experience unlike any other. I was really excited to start - chatting with my coach the first few days, and then I asked her a question about the program that she didn't know the answer to, (which was totally understandable) so she recommended I email customer service. I did right away (this was day three of my first week). The following morning, I had an automated email response canceling my account. I freaked out and contacted the "was this a mistake?" Link on the cancel email, and sent a message to my coach. She apologized and told me I should contact the customer support line (again). So I did. Three emails and two "contact us" submissions later, I never heard back from them (Other than 5 automated - "we received your message and will get back to you shortly" messages). This started 6 days ago. My account has now been canceled, and I have no way to access my coach or continue the trial period. And to think - I was already planning on continuing on and paying this company the $130 for my next three months. Glad their horrid customer service became apparent before my trial period ended.

The main difference to the program is it works to change your thinking and negative habits. I am more focused on the why of my choices than the choices themselves
  • Awful and thieves

DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS APP. This so called coaching service atrocious and a scam. I signed up for a few month, and 3 weeks in found it utterly useless. The coaches were barely responsive and I’m not even sure they weren’t a bot. I then cancelled and they continued to bill me for months, despite my cancelling, deleting the app, and never answering a coach or putting information in again. Not only was it useless but they are thieves.
  • Method may be good but the app is awful

I’ve been trying to log my dinner for 20 min. It’s not in the database so I click add it & after I enter calories I can’t figure out how to get to any next step. All of the navigating is not intuitive. It is really unclear where to tap to essentially ‘enter’ a response. I’ve used several fitness apps & they lack the good philosophy of this program but are far more useable. This personal coach is the unique part of this program. It’s day one... personal coach says keep logging foods & I will check in with you in 4 days. The first few days are the toughest but I’ve seen no sign of the group support. I think that comes later but in the mean time 4 days is an eternity when you are in a place of ill start tomorrow. That is disappointing. The idea of a sort of list of things to do is fine but logging food stays undone til the end of the day & yet it’s still at the top of the list. Ive only just started but can’t figure out where anything is. There is no ‘account’ status anywhere. The signup process gave me options with no understanding of how they were different. Free two week trial was then offered for a dollar. Is it free or a dollar? I don’t esp care but it’d be nice to know. After entering payment info I was told my account was upgraded. To what? Did I pay for anything? Their help page says to look in email for a receipt to see what you were charged. Fun! Not. This program is expensive & some aspects are well done but I foresee canceling soon. There are enough low cost/free methods that work well. Also this thing with short articles to read along the way seems like it would work well in an iPad format but app is only iPhone. :-/
